The Lost Cosmonaut was inspired by my fascination for the cosmos and the men and women who have sacrificed everything in their pursuit to map it. Whether or not the legends are true is really of no concern to me. What I value is the mystery of it all. This song follows the story of a fictional Major Tom-like character who, in his quest for knowledge, resisted the very human instinct of self-preservation and instead dove into the abyss of space - selflessly (and selfishly) to answer the age-old questions of humanity. His quest ended in, possibly, death but, ultimately, immortality; ultimate knowledge - no comfort for his family but peace in the wisdom he had gained from, what he perceived as, god itself.
